Colonic Equipment Types: open system -vs- closed system

There are basically two different types of equipment for administering colonics, open or closed systems. There are many different manufacturers of colonic equipment, but all systems are open or closed. Before deciding to have a colonic it is helpful to understand the basic difference between the two equipment types. It is also helpful when choosing a colon therapist to know what type of equipment they are using.

The CLOSED System

With a closed system, the client lies on a table similar to a massage table and the equipment is plumbed into a cabinet attached to a nearby wall. The therapist then inserts a speculum into the rectum and attached one end of a disposable hose to the speculum and the other end is connected to the equipment. A pressurized stream of water is then delivered through the attached hose and when the colon is filled and pressure reaches maximum levels the therapist manually drains through the same hose. Water pressure and temperature within the colon must be monitored to avoid leakage or perforation, requiring the constant attention of the therapist.

This type of system is generally the better choice for patients who have spinal injuries or causing a loss of control of the anal sphincter muscle.

The OPEN System:

With an open system, the client lies on a molded fiberglass table that looks like a recliner. The table has a basin cut into it and a small, disposable rectal tube, about the size of a pencil is at one end. After demonstrating to the client how to gently insert the tube, the therapist leaves, providing total privacy for the client. The therapist returns when the client is ready and starts the continuous flow of gravity-fed water through the rectal tube and into the client. When the client feels full, they simply push out and the rectal tube moves to one side within the rectum allowing the softened matter to flow out. It then flows to the bottom of the basin and past a 3 inch clear viewing tube. An odor exhaust system works so that it remains odor free at all times. The therapist remains in the room and provides instruction during the first session, but private time can be provided during future sessions.

This type of system is very gentle and is usually the better choice for clients who have had any type of bowel disease. The open system is generally regarded as more comfortable than the closed system.

The Colonic Center of America uses the OPEN system.

What happens during the procedure?

Colon Hydrotherapy is clean and relaxing. A soothing flow of purified warm water is instilled gently into the colon through a small disposable nozzle, ("size of a pencil"). The small rectal nozzle is easily inserted to cleanse (evacuate) the contents of your lower colon. Your dignity is always maintained! The system is design to allow evacuation of the contents of the colon during the administration of the colonic irrigation.

The pressure, temperature, and flow of water are all safely regulated throughout the session. The water is purified with an Ultra Violet Water Purification System. The LIBBE device is comfortable and may be operated in privacy for those who prefer solitude. There is no odor! Odor is wisked away through the drain tube. Ask your Physician for a prescription for sessions as needed or contact us for a Physician referral. Used as a non-laxative preparation for colonoscopy or when medically indicated!

How many sessions will I need?

A series of twelve over ten weeks is recommended. It is recommended Two the first week, (one today/one tomorrow) two the second week (one today/one tomorrow), and one a week for the next eight weeks. The reason for that is the human body is exceptionally smart. When we clean out the colon, the body starts pulling waste out of the tissue and putting them into the blood stream. The waste heads for the liver, then back to the colon.

Therefore, the second session on the second day, is necessary so that the digested waste is eliminated rather than reabsorbed. The same reason applies to the following two the second week. After the first four, I then recommend one a week for eight weeks. This slows detoxification to a gentler-tolerable rate.

How can Colon Hydrotherapy help me?

A healthy colon is essential to a healthy body. A Colon Hydrotherapy session has the potential to cleanse a large portion of the whole colon, or large intestine, releasing mucus, gas, and fecal impactions during repeated fills and empties.

Unlike enemas and laxatives, Colon Hydrotherapy is not physically addictive. With an enema, water enters the body from the rectum under gravity force, distending and weakening the lower section of the colon before being released on the toilet. Laxatives, taken orally, pull water from other parts of the body into the large intestine, and act as a purgative to over-stimulate the colon's peristaltic function, forcefully pushing fecal material out of the system, and weakening the colon muscles. Our cleansing method seems to have a beneficial toning effect while also hydrating and enhancing absorption rather than the possible stretching and fatiguing consequences of enemas or laxatives.

We believe that as you release toxins from your body, you may become more relaxed. Please read Michael Gershon's The Second Brain and Candace Pert's Molecules of Emotion for more information about this mind-body connection.

You might also find that your cravings are diminished or eliminated while, at the same time, you may sense a heightened awareness of how different foods affect you.

Colon Hydrotherapy may also be prescribed by physicians as preparation prior to surgery and intestinal diagnostic procedures (i.e. barium enema, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy).
